FMCSA to release supplemental information on Safety Fitness Determination methodologies

Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will issue a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking to update its Safety Fitness Determination practices, the agency announced Jan. 12.

Almost one year ago, FMCSA published a proposed rule to revise the way it determines whether motor carriers are fit to operate commercial motor vehicles. The proposal called for FMCSA to integrate on-road inspection results, carrier investigations and crash reports.

As part of a supplemental notice, the agency wants to incorporate public comments it received regarding the proposed rule. FMCSA had yet to publish the supplemental notice at press time.

A supplemental notice also will allow FMCSA to address recommendations from a study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences on the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program.
