Washington – Manufacturers will begin adding a bitter flavoring agent to antifreeze and engine coolant to deter children and animals from drinking the poisonous substances, under a new agreement between the Humane Society Legislative Fund and the Consumer Specialty Products Association.
Ethylene glycol, the toxic substance in antifreeze and coolant, has a sweet smell and taste that may attract children and animals. Seventeen states already have passed legislation requiring the addition of a bittering agent, and the voluntary agreement will apply to antifreeze and coolant sold throughout the country.
