New York – An OSHA fact sheet (.pdf file) issued Nov. 29 aims to help Hurricane Sandy cleanup workers identify which types of personal protective equipment they should wear for various tasks.
An OSHA press release states that basic PPE worn during cleanup includes hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, gloves and steel-toe work boots. Other PPE may be appropriate depending on the type of work being performed, such as fall protection when working higher than 6 feet and hearing protection in noisy environments, the release noted.
“Workers engaged in hurricane response and cleanup activities can be exposed to a variety of hazards,” Robert Kulick, OSHA’s regional administrator in New York, said in the press release. “No worker should be sickened or injured while performing this vital work.”
