SVEP and big fines go hand in hand

I’ve been compiling data on the top 10 highest fines proposed by OSHA in fiscal year 2012, and I discovered something interesting.

Nearly all of the cases for which the highest fines were proposed involved employers who were part of OSHA’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program as of Oct. 1. The lone exception was a contractor who was cited along with three others (who are in SVEP) in a larger, single case.

Check out more details about the top 10 fines and SVEP in the annual OSHA Top 10 article in Safety+Health magazine, coming out in December. In the same article, I also will outline the top 10 most frequently cited violations of FY 2012 and have a Q&A with an OSHA official on enforcement.
