Beyond OSHA’s Top 10

Exit routes and aerial lifts

Every December, Safety+Health presents the top 10 most frequently cited OSHA violations from the previous fiscal year.

Throughout 2012, S+H will go beyond the annual Top 10 by presenting violations 11-30. The data*, supplied by OSHA, represents violations cited in FY 2011 (Oct. 1, 2010 – Sept. 30, 2011).

This standard is designed to ensure workplace exit routes are easily accessible and free from hazards.

Total violations: 1,329

Serious violations: 857

Willful violations: 2

Repeat violations: 53

Total initial penalties proposed: $2.22 million

Aerial Lifts

Standard: 1926.453

This standard outlines general requirements for use of aerial lifts. Aerial lifts include vehicle-mounted aerial devices used to elevate personnel to jobsites above ground, such as extensible boom platforms, aerial ladders, articulating boom platforms, vertical towers or a combination of any such devices.

Total violations: 1,299

Serious violations: 1,143

Willful violations: 1

Repeat violations: 81

Total initial penalties proposed: $4.51 million
