Atlanta – Helmets may offer some protection against head injuries during a tornado, according to a recent statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Using a helmet supports the long-standing recommendation from CDC for people to protect their heads during a tornado. However, the most effective method of protection during a tornado is to find shelter or a tornado-safe room, CDC said in the statement.
The statement was prompted by research from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Injury Control Research Center that found motorcycle, football and baseball helmets, and even hard hats used by construction workers, offer more protection against tornado-related injuries than not wearing a helmet.
