Grain Valley, MO – The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association on April 25 released a letter (.pdf file) criticizing the inclusion in a Senate surface transportation reauthorization bill of a mandate to install electronic onboard recorders in long-haul trucks for monitoring hours of service.
EOBRs would be a costly burden on the trucking industry and have no proven safety benefit, the association claims.
“This is being done under the guise of compliance with federal hours-of-service regulations, but it is actually a way for large motor carrier companies to squeeze more ‘productivity’ out of drivers,” Todd Spencer, OOIDA executive vice president, said in a press release.
