NIOSH issues skin profile on BPA

Washington – NIOSH designated bisphenol A as a skin sensitizer in a skin notation profile (.pdf file) released April 12.

The profile summarizes research, including a study that found the skin absorbed more than one-third of an applied dose of BPA and several studies in which patients given a patch with 1 percent BPA developed contact dermatitis or skin lesions.

However, NIOSH said a lack of relevant toxicity data on BPA prevented the agency from evaluating the potential for systemic effects in humans or animals after dermal exposure. BPA is a chemical commonly used in making plastics.
