Institute to study effects of cell phone blockers

Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will conduct a study on the potential safety impact of cell phone blocker technologies, the institute announced March 22.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cell phone filters or blockers are used to prevent drivers from performing banned cell phone functions while driving. NHTSA solicited research programs to develop cell phone blocker technology that meets the following criteria:

  • Automatically blocks calls and text messages from being sent or received on the driver’s phone while the vehicle is in motion
  • Allows passenger use while a vehicle is in motion
  • Complies with Federal Communications Commission regulations, statutes and rules, such as allowing 911 calls
