Arlington, VA – The comment period for a proposed rule (.pdf file) on weekly examinations of work areas in underground coal mines will be extended through March 28, the Mine Safety and Health Administration announced March 1.

The rule, proposed Dec. 27, 2010, would require operators to examine mines for violations of health and safety standards and hazardous conditions, and then take corrective actions. Operators also would have to review related citations and orders with mine examiners on a quarterly basis.
