Study links occupational hearing loss to sleep disturbances

Be’er Sheba, Israel – Workplace-related hearing loss may affect sleep quality, according to a study from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Researchers compared the sleep quality of 298 male employees at the same workplace and found tinnitus was the main sleep-disturbing factor. However, hearing impairment among workers exposed to loud noise at work also contributed to sleep disturbances, especially insomnia, regardless of age or years of exposure, according to the study abstract.

Among workers with hearing loss, 51 percent reported tinnitus, compared with 14 percent of those with normal hearing.
