The number of commercial motor vehicles placed out of service for brake component defects during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Brake Safety Week inspection declined significantly, according to a report released Oct. 15.
Greenbelt, MD-based CVSA’s annual inspection, which took place Sept. 12-18, is part of its Operation Air Brake campaign aimed at improving CMV brake safety.
Findings from CVSA show:
- 30,472 vehicles were inspected — the highest number of vehicles inspected since the program started in 1998. In 2009, 26,630 vehicles were inspected.
- 4,117 vehicles were placed out of service for brakes.
- 2,717 vehicles were placed out of service for brake adjustments.
- 2,435 vehicles were placed out of service for brake components.
