The Mine Safety and Health Administration on Oct. 19 published a proposed rule (.pdf file) aimed at lowering exposure to respirable coal mine dust as part of its effort to end “black lung” disease.
NIOSH data indicates black lung disease is on the rise among coal miners. The proposed rule would cut the concentration limit for coal mine dust in half over two years and phase-in use of continuous personal dust monitors, which provide real-time monitoring.
Comments on the proposed rule are due by Feb. 28, 2011.
