Campaign aims to reduce pediatric sports injuries

In an effort to reduce the more than 3.5 million youth sports injuries that occur every year, Washington-based Safe Kids USA this week announced the launch of a new nationwide educational campaign.

The campaign primarily is focused on the necessity of pre-sports physicals and the dangers of overuse injuries, concussions, and dehydration. It will include a series of public service announcements, local youth sports safety clinics and an interactive webcast on Oct. 27.

According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 38 million children participate in organized sports and 1 out of every 10 requires medical treatment for sports-related injury. NIH estimates that half of these injuries are preventable.
