The Federal Highway Administration on Oct. 1 launched a new initiative to encourage communities nationwide to support pedestrian safety.
The goal of Walk Friendly Communities is to improve pedestrian safety in areas nationwide by providing a safe means for walking in and around neighborhoods.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in 2009, 4,092 pedestrians were killed and the 14-and-younger age group accounted for 244 (6 percent) of those fatalities. An estimated 59,000 pedestrians were injured, and 13,000 were 14 or younger.
FHWA announced in a press release that communities can apply for WFC designation and will have access to suggestions and resources on how to improve pedestrian safety. Applications will be accepted Nov. 1 through Dec. 15.
