Boston may be the safest city to live in if you have young children, according to a list developed by Underwriters Laboratories. Northbrook, IL-based UL commissioned a study with Sperling’s Best Places, a website that provides data on people and places and then rates the data, to determine which of the 50 largest cities in the United States are the safest for children.
Researchers evaluated cities using 25 child-focused safety factors, such as laws regulating smoking, pool safety, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and bike helmets. The study also examined accessibility to hospitals and response time for police and fire personnel. Cities with high rates of crime, air pollution, child pedestrian accidents, injuries and drowning were eliminated.
The 2010 “Safest Cities for Families with Young Children” include:
- Boston, MA
- Columbus, OH
- Louisville, KY
- Minneapolis, MN
- New York, NY
- Portland, OR
- San Francisco, CA
- Seattle, WA
- Tampa, FL
- Virginia Beach, VA
