Interior Department issues safety culture recommendations for offshore oil industry

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (formerly the Minerals Management Service) needs to develop a new culture of safety to protect people and prevent environmental disasters, according to a new report from a team of officials at the Department of the Interior.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar established the team to review offshore oil and gas oversight and regulation after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in April.

The report (.pdf file) contains recommendations ranging from more support in the form of personnel training and education to stronger inspections and enforcement.
