Eighty-five percent of workers who participated in a survey consider workplace safety the most important labor standard, according to the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.
The survey report also found the media and public pay closest attention to workplace safety after large workplace accidents. However, coverage of the Gulf oil spill focused more on the environmental risk than the deaths of the 11 rig workers, the study said.
Although most workers reported being satisfied with their jobs, surveys from 2006 suggest 21 percent of workers “often” find their jobs stressful, while 13 percent feel their work is “always” stressful, according to an NORC press release.
NORC conducted the survey for the Washington-based Public Welfare Foundation.
