The Maritime Administration on Monday issued warnings that pirate activity near the waters off the Horn of Africa and in the Indian Ocean could increase between now and May.
According to a press release, the agency noted an increase in recent pirate attacks due to the end of the Northeast monsoon season. Acting Maritime Administrator David T. Matsuda advised that although it has been nearly a year since Somali pirates hijacked the U.S.-flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama, mariners need to be vigilant and prepare for potential attacks when in the region.
Last year, MARAD officials testified during congressional hearings on the significant negative effects international piracy has on the safety of maritime workers, commerce and humanitarian efforts.
