Department of Transportation researchers would like to continue collecting data used to evaluate the nation’s transportation system.
The Research and Innovative Technology Administration’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics published a notice (.pdf file) in the Feb. 2 Federal Register requesting approval to extend a program that assesses the public’s use of and satisfaction with the transportation system. Questions evaluate public confidence in safety, security procedures and work commute habits for various modes of transportation. If approved, the study would include 1,500 respondents.
In related news, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration researchers are requesting uniform criteria for observational surveys by states on safety belt use. According to a notice of proposed rulemaking (.pdf file) published in the Jan. 28 Federal Register, NHTSA is seeking a new form for reporting safety belt rates so future surveys will give states more accurate data to guide occupant protection programs.
