Preliminary data from 2009 shows Iowa had its lowest number of work-related deaths since 2001, according to the Iowa Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation program based at the University of Iowa College of Public Health in Iowa City.
An IA FACE investigator attributed the decline partially to the economic downtown, which has reduced traffic crashes in general. Farm-related deaths declined, but the industry still accounts for more traumatic work deaths than any other industry in the state, with 35 percent of work deaths in 2009, according to a press release from the University of Iowa, which conducts IA FACE in partnership with the Iowa Department of Health and the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
