Washington — A new assessment tool from the National Safety Council is intended to help employers prevent serious incidents and fatalities by identifying gaps and improvement opportunities in their safety systems, practices and culture.
Developed by NSC’s Work to Zero initiative in partnership with the NCCCO Foundation, the Organization Safety Gap Analysis Tool “transforms the existing NSC Gap Analysis checklist into an interactive, tailored experience.” It was built on the council’s evidence-based SIF Prevention Model.
The assessment focuses on seven “core elements critical to SIF prevention”:
- Safety and health operating environment
- Management leadership
- Worker engagement
- Hazard identification and prioritization
- Hazard abatement and control
- Implementation and operation
- Continuous improvement
“Each element includes statements used to assess your site’s or organization’s performance,” NSC says. Users rate each element as:
Green: The criterion is fully met.
Yellow: The criterion is partially met.
Red: There’s little to no evidence that the criterion has been met.
After completing the 10- to 15-minute assessment, users will get a results summary featuring:
- Strengths and weaknesses across all seven categories
- Recommendations for improvement
- Best practices for improving safety performance
