Does my first aid kit meet current regulations? Is it suitable for my work environment? How often should it be updated?
To anyone who may have these or similar questions about workplace first aid kits, Frank Guarisco, chief operating officer and partner at OptiCare Connect, offers this advice: “Treat first aid readiness as a dynamic process – kits should be reviewed regularly, tailored to the specific risks of the workplace and supported by employee training.”
Industry-specific kits are one way first aid product manufacturers are “evolving to meet the demands of modern workplaces,” Guarisco said. These kits include “advanced wound care, burn treatment and infection control supplies.”
There’s also a “growing emphasis on modular and customizable kits.” What this means is employers can select first aid kit items that are necessary for their workplace.
“Employers should also ensure products are appropriate for the specific hazards of their workplace and are regularly reviewed and updated,” Guarisco said.
He added: “Simply having a stocked kit isn’t enough. Workers should know what’s in it, how to use it and when to escalate care.
“First aid products are not just compliance items – they’re critical tools that require familiarity and regular training. A well-maintained kit is only effective if people know how and when to use it.”
