BCSP Viewpoints: From global insight to local impact

One quality that sets the safety profession apart is its collaborative nature. In many professions, knowledge is guarded. In safety, it’s eagerly shared. When we develop an innovative method or uncover new research on protecting people, we don’t keep it to ourselves because when it comes to safety, we’re all in this together.

A new development in one place or industry can translate into meaningful action for safety pros elsewhere – whether that’s next door or halfway around the world. That’s why one of my favorite mantras is, “Think globally, act locally.” But what exactly does it mean?

To be the best safety pro you can be, you must be willing to expand your horizons and learn from all the good things happening in the world. It can be easy to stay in your own silo and do things the way you’ve always done them, but those who move the profession forward are always focused on continual improvement.

Our world is so interconnected today – take advantage of it! Industry publications, social networks, newsletters, webinars and conferences showcase the latest safety developments. Online mentoring platforms foster one-on-one connection and growth. Professional membership organizations and certification opportunities open doors to an entire network of leading safety pros and their ideas.

I served as the first vice president for ASSP Region IX. Before that, I was an administrator for the ASSP Global Practice Specialty. We had representatives from 32 countries who acted to support one another. It was an opportunity to discover different perspectives, share challenges and successes, and learn from one another.

Among that group, we had safety pros operating within different regulatory structures and cultural frameworks. Our dialogue often reminded me that even though hazards may look different, the principles for protecting people are universal. This experience broadened my mindset toward learning-driven, people-centered safety systems – something I was able to use in my everyday work.

And that’s really the key. Learning from others is only part of this process. You must then be able to apply those insights in your specific role and location. Our greatest impact is almost always in our own environment.

The real challenge is translating what you learn into actionable steps at your workplace. What does this look like in practice? Perhaps it’s adding a “What’s different today?” segment to pre-shift meetings, formalizing a policy for near-miss reporting or adapting innovative training techniques to fit the learning styles of  your team.

Take the time to examine your workplace, consider the scenarios you regularly encounter and think to yourself, “How can I apply this principle to make our work safer?”

When we think globally, we stay informed about lessons learned worldwide. When we act locally, we implement practical controls that fit our specific worksite.

Ultimately, safety isn’t only about compliance – it’s about continuous learning and responsible implementation. All you need for the next breakthrough may already exist somewhere else – you just have to find it. So, let’s embrace the mantra, “Think globally, act locally.”
