MSHA releases tools to help track violations

MSHA: Mining fatalities -- Jul13

Arlington, VA – The Mine Safety and Health Administration is offering two online tools intended to help mine operators and workers review violations of safety standards.

The Rules to Live By Calculator tabulates a mine’s number of violations of standards related to MSHA’s Rules to Live By outreach and enforcement program. Data is available for underground mines during the most recent inspection quarter and for surface mines during the previous six-month inspection period.

The Part 75 Exam Rule Calculator shows mines’ compliance with nine standards for hazards considered to “pose the greatest risk to underground coal miners,” including ventilation, methane and combustible materials.

Users enter their mine ID number and a date range into the tools, which then compare the mine’s average number of violations to the national average.
