Law enforcement deaths down in 2012; firefighter deaths unchanged

Washington – The number of law enforcement officers killed on duty in 2012 decreased 23 percent from the previous year, while the number of firefighter fatalities remained unchanged, according to preliminary data.

USFA releases report on highway motor vehicle fires

Emmitsburg, MD – An average of 300 people were killed and approximately 1,250 injured in highway motor vehicle fires between 2008 and 2010, according to a report released Jan. 7 by the U.S. Fire Administration.

Senate confirms Huerta as FAA administrator

Washington – The Senate on Jan. 1 confirmed Michael Huerta as the new administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. Huerta was appointed acting administrator in December 2011 following the resignation of previous administrator Randy Babbitt.

OOIDA files petition for review over FMCSA fatigue actions

Grain Valley, MO – The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association filed a petition on Dec. 21 with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to block the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and law enforcement agencies from enforcing fatigue-related out-of-service orders stemming from “reasonable articulable suspicion.”
