Although research has shown red-light cameras can be effective in reducing traffic crashes, people in at least three cities on Nov. 2 voted against use of the automated traffic enforcement systems.
Orange County election results show 72.9 percent of voters in Anaheim, CA, voted “yes” in support of prohibiting red-light cameras in the city. Voters in Mukilteo, WA, passed a measure with a “yes” vote of 70.1 percent to repeal an ordinance that allowed the city to use camera surveillance to impose fines, according to Snohomish County election results.
And according to Harris County election results (.pdf file), 52.8 percent of people in Houston voted “no” to continue use of red-light cameras to enforce state or local laws relating to traffic safety.
