CPSC launches product safety database

Washington – A new website will make it easier for consumers to obtain safety information and report safety issues with products, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced March 11.

Mandated by Congress, the website is intended to help CPSC identify hazards and relay safety information to consumers more quickly.

“Through SaferProducts.gov, consumers will have open access to product safety information that they have never seen before and the information will empower them to make safer choices,” said Inez Tenenbaum, CPSC chairman.

Consumers can submit online reports of safety issues with products for CPSC review. Within five business days, qualifying reports will be sent to the product’s manufacturer, who will have an additional 10 business days to respond to the complaint. At the end of this time period, the report and manufacturer’s comments will be posted on the website for public review.

Even with the new website in place, CPSC said it will continue to accept consumer reports in writing through fax or by phone, as it has in the past.
