Noting that the vast majority of states would fail to meet a deadline for enhancing driver’s license security, the Department of Homeland Security extended the Dec. 31 material compliance deadline.
The deadline for full compliance — May 10, 2011 — remains in effect, but DHS continued to push Congress to enact the PASS ID Act (S. 1261), which would repeal the 2005 REAL ID Act that required the enhancements.
REAL ID established requirements for state-issued driver’s licenses to be met before the federal government could accept them as valid identification. PASS ID seeks to enhance the security of licenses and identification cards, and address concerns states had regarding the original act.
