Ergonomics

Ergonomic disorders affect the soft tissues, specifically the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, blood vessels and spinal discs. These issues can result from job tasks such as working on an assembly line, using heavy equipment or typing on a computer. Off the job, they can occur from playing video games, helping someone move or working on a home repair project. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, numbness, tingling and loss of grip strength. Ergonomic injuries often are caused by:

  • Overexertion while lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, reaching or stretching
  • Repetitive motions
  • Working in awkward positions
  • Sitting or standing too long in one position
  • Using excessive force
  • Vibration
  • Resting on sharp corners or edges
  • Temperature extremes

Consult your physician if you experience any symptoms of an ergonomic injury.
