Washington – The Federal Aviation Administration is requesting comment (.pdf file) on its current policies for passenger use of portable electronic devices during flight. These devices include e-readers and laptops, which emit wireless signals that could potentially interfere with an aircraft’s navigation equipment.
FAA is soliciting the following feedback:
- Can these devices interfere with crew safety briefings and instructions?
- Should aircraft operators publish their portable electronic device policies?
- Should devices posing projectile injury risk be stowed during takeoff, approach, landing and abnormal conditions?
- Are there other reasons why aircraft system-compatible devices should be restricted?
According to an FAA press release, the comments will be used as part of an upcoming study on how portable electronic devices – other than cell phones – are determined safe or unsafe for aircraft use.
