Technical improvements implemented under a new aviation system and a heightened safety culture will contribute to safer skies and better use of airspace and resources, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration said Oct. 19.
During a speech before the National Business Aviation Association’s annual conference in Atlanta, FAA Administrator J. Randolph Babbitt outlined progress that will occur or is occurring under the Next Generation Air Transportation System. The system aims to move to a satellite-based system from a ground-based system of air traffic control.
Capabilities of NextGen intended to improve air safety include:
- Adding more terrain information, better weather information and the latest on restricted airspace
- Moving map displays that show traffic and will enhance situational awareness and virtually eliminate runway incursions
In August, FAA issued a final rule (.pdf file) with amendments that would limit the hours of flight and duty time for pilots in an effort to address pilot fatigue.
