Washington – The Department of the Interior on April 4 issued a final rule (.pdf file) expanding safety requirements for the offshore drilling industry.
The final rule is a response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It supplements an October 2010 rule requiring operators to implement Safety and Environmental Management Systems for oil and gas operations. The new rule emphasizes employee participation in hazard mitigation, establishes guidelines for reporting unsafe working conditions and performing job safety analyses for activities stated in the SEMS, and requires SEMS to be audited by an accredited provider.
The rule is schedule to go into effect June 4.
