Washington — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is reviving its Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee and accepting nominations for members to serve two-year terms.
MCSAC advises and offers recommendations to FMCSA on matters related to motor carrier safety programs and regulations. It comprises no more than 20 members. Candidates are eligible to self-nominate or can be nominated by an individual or organization.
Submissions should include:
- Name, title and relevant contact information of the individual requesting consideration
- A letter of support from a company, union, trade association, or academic or nonprofit organization on letterhead containing a brief explanation as to why the nominee should be considered for membership
- A short biography of the nominee, including professional and academic credentials
- An affirmative statement that the nominee meets all MCSAC eligibility requirements
FMCSA renewed the two-year charter for MCSAC in December. The committee’s most recent meeting took place virtually in December 2024. Moving forward, MCSAC is expected to meet virtually twice a year “unless otherwise required by law or approved by” the transportation secretary, DOT says.
The deadline for nominations is Feb. 23.
In September, a group of 46 House Democrats, led by Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA), wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy demanding that DOT “immediately reconstitute” multiple federal transportation advisory committees, including MCSAC. The call came amid reports that the department had elected to suspend at least 12 such committees.
“These committees play a critical role in engaging frontline worker perspectives and ensuring public transparency,” the lawmakers wrote. “Many of these committees are the only forum where agency, industry and labor representatives can convene in a structured manner. It is critical that workers directly impacted by transportation safety issues retain a seat at the table.”
