GAO: NTSB has increased safety research efforts

Washington – The National Transportation Safety Board has fully implemented all of the Government Accountability Office’s recommendations set for the agency between 2006 and 2008, according to a GAO report (.pdf file) released in January.

A 2010 GAO report (.pdf file) found NTSB had implemented nine of the 21 recommendations from GAO, including a directive to increase the amount of safety research it conducts. The agency is mandated to carry out special studies, including multiyear investigations on transportation safety topics, to provide recommendations to policy-making transportation agencies.

According to the latest GAO report, the recommendations implemented since 2010 include administrative and human resource directives such as information technology security upgrades, additional training for investigators, more comprehensive financial management, and document computerization.
