Federal reviews of several state-run occupational safety and health agencies are being evaluated and soon will be released to the public, according to testimony (.pdf file) from OSHA administrator David Michaels July 13 before the House Education and Labor Committee.
The reviews, which Michaels described as “in-depth audits” of state OSHA programs, were prompted by an examination of Nevada’s state-run program following a series of high-profile construction deaths in that state.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, states have the option of running their own OSHA program. To date, 21 states do so, and an additional four operate programs covering only public-sector employment.
