Michigan earns NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate status

Lansing, MI — The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is the first state labor department to be named a Total Worker Health Affiliate by NIOSH.

LEO is being recognized for how it has integrated mental health into workplace safety and health strategies through its Healthy Work Healthy Mind initiative. The program aims to help employers spread awareness by addressing stress, trauma and mental health challenges on the job.

Among the resources developed by LEO is the LEADS (Learn, Educate, Act, Deploy, Study) workplace mental health consultation pilot program. The five-phase framework is intended to help employers:

- Digital Partners -
  • Understand the organization’s unique mental health needs.
  • Train leaders and staff to recognize and respond to mental health challenges.
  • Empower employees to shape a healthier work environment.
  • Implement policy and workflow changes that reduce stress and increase support.
  • Measure progress and continuous improvement.

The agency also hosts free monthly webinars, coordinates speakers across the state, publishes mental health reports and connects employers with tools and best practices.

“Work has a direct impact on people’s health and well-being,” LEO Deputy Director of Labor Sean Egan said. “Through Healthy Work Healthy Mind, we’re helping employers create workplaces where workers are supported, safe and able to thrive.

“Being a NIOSH Total Worker Health Affiliate ensures Michigan’s approach is evidence-based, people-centered and designed to strengthen both workers and businesses.”
