The Mine Safety and Health Administration is working on a new rule that seeks to eliminate the risk of pneumoconiosis, known as “black lung” disease, by lowering occupational exposure to coal mine dust as well as other requirements.
The Office of Management and Budget’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs received the rule for review on July 1. A notice of proposed rulemaking is expected to be published in September.
The new rule, which is a combination of several rulemaking actions MSHA has been pursuing on black lung, is part of a strategy the agency launched last year to end the disease.
