New directive addresses marine cargo handling

Washington – OSHA on Aug. 10 issued a revised directive (.pdf file) regarding enforcement guidance for inspections in longshoring and marine terminals.

Changes include:

  • Clarification on which personal protective equipment employers have to provide at no cost to employees and their obligation to cover replacement PPE
  • Guidance on vertical tandem lifts
  • Updated answers to commonly asked questions
  • Incorporation of the settlement agreement between the National Grain and Feed Association Inc. and OSHA

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, seven worker fatalities and more than 2,900 injuries were recorded in the marine cargo handling industry in 2010.
