New York — A new law in New York City will require construction worker and supervisor safety training to address mental health, substance misuse, and suicide risk and prevention.
The law (Int. 1384-2025), which amends Local Law 126 of 2021, was enacted on Jan. 3 and is set to go into effect May 3. It directs anyone seeking site safety training or a site safety supervisor card to work on NYC Department of Buildings-permitted sites to complete two credits focused on the topics as part of the existing training requirements (at least 40 hours for workers and 62 hours for supervisors).
The new regulation applies to all card holders, including construction and demolition workers, site supervisors, site safety managers, and coordinators. The law allows cards to be renewed for up to one year after the expiration date, provided the new training is completed within a year of the card’s expiration and no later than the submission of a renewal application.
