Quincy, MA – Fires in 2011 resulted in 1.2 percent fewer civilian injuries and 3.7 percent fewer civilian fatalities than in 2010, according to a National Fire Protection Association report (.pdf file).
Findings were based on fire department-reported data from NFPA’s 2011 National Fire Experience Survey. Among the report’s other findings:
- 17,500 civilian fire injuries and 3,005 civilian fire deaths occurred in 2011.
- Home fires accounted for nearly 80 percent of civilian fire injuries and nearly 84 percent of civilian fire fatalities.
- Public fire departments responded to approximately 1.4 million fires in 2011.
NFPA called for more education on preventing injury or death in home settings, such as increasing awareness of fires set by cigarettes or children using lighters.
