NHTSA launches enhanced five-star safety rating system

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday unveiled its updated five-star safety rating system for new passenger motor vehicles.

The enhanced 5-Star Safety Ratings Program now includes ratings that evaluate side pole crash testing and crash prevention technologies. Also new to the system is an “Overall Vehicle Score” for each vehicle tested.

According to a press release, the vehicle safety ratings range from one to five stars, with five stars being the highest rating. New and more rigorous standards for frontal crash, side crash and rollover resistance will be used to evaluate the safety of passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, vans and pickup trucks.
