Washington – A notice of proposed rulemaking (.pdf file) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would require vehicle manufacturers to include a brake-throttle override system to ensure vehicles stop if the brake and accelerator are pressed at the same time.
The brake-throttle override requirement is part of an effort to minimize unintended acceleration and prevent collisions due to accelerator control system disconnections, accelerator pedals sticking or floor mat entrapment, according to a NHTSA press release.
The feature would apply to new passenger cars, multi-purpose passenger vehicles, and trucks and buses weighing less than approximately 10,000 pounds.
Comments will be accepted for 60 days after the NPRM is published in the Federal Register.
