The National Institutes of Health this month unveiled a prototype of a website intended to help consumers, first responders, health care providers and poison control centers identify unknown medications. Pillbox features high-resolution images of solid pharmaceuticals and allows users to identify pills either by name, sight or physical description. Searches can be conducted by size, color, shape, scoring and imprint.
Once the pill has been identified, the site provides additional Food and Drug Administration information about the medication, including its name, ingredients and uses.
NIH cautions that the site is still under development and is not yet intended for clinical use. The agency said comments and suggestions are welcome.
