Washington – NIOSH recently issued a progress report (.pdf file) from its Nanotechnology Research Center describing the center’s projects from its establishment in 2004 through 2011. Achievements include:
- Developing guidance for nanotoxicology studies
- Identifying pulmonary and cardiovascular hazards of certain carbon nanotubes in animals
- Conducting more than 40 field assessments in nanomaterial manufacturer and user facilities
- Publishing a framework for conducting workplace emissions testing
- Developing recommended exposure limits for titanium dioxide and carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers
- Identifying necessary research to ensure the health of workers handling nanomaterials
- Showing how responsible nanotechnology development and worker safety and health can be achieved
