NIOSH recounts progress on nanotechnology

Washington – NIOSH recently issued a progress report (.pdf file) from its Nanotechnology Research Center describing the center’s projects from its establishment in 2004 through 2011. Achievements include:

  • Developing guidance for nanotoxicology studies
  • Identifying pulmonary and cardiovascular hazards of certain carbon nanotubes in animals
  • Conducting more than 40 field assessments in nanomaterial manufacturer and user facilities
  • Publishing a framework for conducting workplace emissions testing
  • Developing recommended exposure limits for titanium dioxide and carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers
  • Identifying necessary research to ensure the health of workers handling nanomaterials
  • Showing how responsible nanotechnology development and worker safety and health can be achieved
