Washington – The National Transportation Safety Board has issued recommendations and alerts to help improve safety on railroads and aircraft.
The railroad recommendations were issued March 8 in response to two incidents in 2012 in which workers may have improperly used jumper wires to operate rail crossing signals. NTSB recommended the Federal Transit Administration (.pdf file) and Federal Railroad Administration (.pdf file) issue a safety advisory detailing best practices for using jumper wires to deactivate or perform signal maintenance on active rails, and include information on the 2012 incidents.
NTSB on March 12 also issued five safety alerts based on common causes of general aviation incidents. They cover:
- Decision-making for pilots (.pdf file) and mechanics (.pdf file)
- Impacts (.pdf file) of potential aircraft mechanical problems
- Flying in reduced visibility conditions (.pdf file)
- Preventing aerodynamic stalls at low altitudes (.pdf file)
