Washington – The Department of Transportation’s proposed fiscal year 2013 budget (.pdf file), announced Feb. 13, includes increases for several safety-related agencies.
Among them:
- $580 million for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a $25 million increase from FY 2012
- $276 million for the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, a $75 million increase
- $981 million for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a $181 million increase
- $196 million for the Federal Railroad Administration’s rail safety and development programs, an $18 million increase
According to a DOT press release, the budget also proposes nearly $30 billion in funding for the next six years for surface transportation safety programs, a 137 percent increase over the previous long-term authorization. This amount includes $330 million for anti-distracted driving campaigns, DOT said.
