Public hearings will cover two MSHA rules

Arlington, VA – The Mine Safety and Health Administration recently scheduled four public hearings in June on two proposed rules covering work area examinations (.pdf file) and pattern-of-violations criteria.

The examination rule would require mine operators to examine mines for health and safety violations and take corrective actions. The second rule would simplify and strengthen the POV process by establishing a searchable database for compliance information, eliminating POV warning letters, and removing the requirement that only final citations and orders can be used in POV review.

MSHA said it will allow the public to comment on any specific changes to POV criteria. The meeting dates are:

  • June 2 in Denver
  • June 7 in Charleston, WV
  • June 9 in Birmingham, AL
  • June 15 in Arlington, VA
