Truck driver survey asks about HOS restart rule changes

Arlington, VA – The American Transportation Research Institute, the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, is encouraging commercial motor vehicle drivers and carriers to take a new survey about changes to the 34-hour restart provision in federal hours-of-service regulations. The changes are set to go into effect July 1, 2013, unless appealed.

A final rule (.pdf file) issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in December 2011 allows a driver to restart his or her weekly driving hours following 34 hours of continuous rest only once during a seven-day period. It also requires the driver to take two rest periods between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. during the 34 hours of rest.

Survey results will be used as part of a study on the restart changes planned to be released in early 2013, according to an ATRI press release.

The survey will be available online until late November, an ATRI spokesperson said.
