USFA: Home fire deaths up from last year

Emmitsburg, MD – The first half of January saw more home fire deaths than the same period last year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Citing media reports, USFA said that from Jan. 1 to Jan. 16, 148 home fire deaths occurred – 24 more than at this point in 2012. More than half of the 2013 fatalities involved older adults and children.

January, February and March are the top months for home fires, most of which are caused by cooking and heating, according to USFA.
